Chapter 7
April 1 st
Claire wakes just as the ensuite door opens and out walks Max in only a towel wrapped low around his hips. His wet skin glistens from the sunlight shining through the window.
âMmm, good morning Constable,â Claire grins, admiring the view in front of her.
âMorning beautiful. Sorry if I woke you. I got a message earlier and I have to duck into work for a few hours this morning.â
âI thought this was your rostered day off?â Claire sits up, holding the sheet to her chest.
âIt was supposed to be. But Mondays can get a bit busy after dealing with complaints about the young kids in town. And when duty calls, I must go in.â As much as Max would love to return to bed with Claire and spend all day with her, he canât. Not today.
When Max drops his towel, Claire bites the corner of her bottom lip and watches him wander around her room naked while collecting his scattered clothing.
With no time to waste Max is dressed and sitting on the edge of the bed putting his shoes on.
âI should be back by twelve oâclock and
we can have lunch together. How does that sound?â
âThat sounds perfect. Iâll have some lunch ready.â
Claire crawls out of bed and goes to the bathroom to splash water on her face. While Claire gets ready, Max wakes the kids up and makes them breakfast.
When she walks into the kitchen, Max has all the boys up at the table eating breakfast. Kane and Leo are dressed in their school uniforms
She grins to herself. Why hasnât some woman snatched this man up? He is perfect. Is this what it would be like if we lived together. It kinda feels like a family.
Mentally slapping herself across the face. âFamily? Geez, what am I thinking.â
âClaire? are you ok?â Max asks just as her toast pops up and he walks over to
place it on a plate for her.
âHuh? Yeah. Iâm fine.â She takes her seat at the table and Max puts the toast in front of her. âThank you.â
After the boys have finished eating, Claire packs a lunch for all three boys. She follows them out the door and waves as they drive off.
Max quickly drives them back to his place so he and Dillon can change into their uniforms also.
Claire glances around the room, Straightening up the cushions, taking Leoâs toys back into his room. Then makes all the beds before baking a treat to surprise the kids after school.
As the cookies are baking in the oven, Claire starts on the raspberry and white chocolate Cupcakes. A bad stench wafts through the kitchen window. Just as she closes it, the oven timer goes off, she removes the cookies and places the cakes into the oven.
There is a knock on the door, she checks the time. âFifteen minutes passed twelve. Youâre late,â she teases before calling out louder, âIâm coming.â She takes off the oven mitts and drops them on the kitchen bench and quickly set the oven timer again.
